About

No matter the task, whether it’s big or small, I place people at the centre of what I do. I aim to empower people and support them through their journey every step of the way.

I am based in the Wellington region and I have been a lawyer since 2005.  I have spent most of my career helping  people who have had their rights breached in some way, or have been hurt by the actions of other people or organisations. I believe there is immense power in obtaining apology, acknowledgement and compensation to right those wrongs.

I have broad experience across the law, ranging from privacy and medico-legal issues, negligence claims to Bill of Rights actions for prisoners. I have appeared in a range of courts, tribunals and a Royal Commission.

How can I help?

I have represented people from the Tenancy Tribunal right up to the Court of Appeal and a Royal Commission of Inquiry. I am an experienced advocate and I pride myself on giving honest, accurate advice in simple language.

I am passionate about protecting the rights of people who have been, or are, detained in State institutions. I have spent years seeking redress for abuse perpetrated on children and vulnerable adults and frequently act for prisoners who have had their rights breached in prison. I have achieved results for people harmed in prison by unlawful acts, such as using tie-down beds, unlawful restraints or traumatic searches. Recently, I have appeared in the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care, helping survivors of abuse in State and Faith-Based care tell their stories.

I can help you navigate complaint avenues to achieve better healthcare, protect your privacy or address discrimination concerns. I can represent you during inquiries or provide answers for businesses and organisations who need an independent inquiry conducted into allegations of misbehaviour.

I can help with:

  • Claims for prisoners for breaches of the Bill of Rights Act and/or Human Rights Act;
  • Parole: appearances before the NZ Parole Board, including Extended Supervision Orders, reviewing parole conditions and recall applications;
  • Getting the best result for complaints about healthcare, education or other treatment;
  • Discrimination complaints, if you feel you have been unfairly treated on the basis of your sex, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnicity or another ground of discrimination;
  • Privacy issues: if you feel your personal information has been inappropriately collected, shared or stored, or not provided to you or your privacy has been breached in other ways;
  • Carrying out independent investigations; and
  • Any other dispute or concerns involving your rights.

I am a civil legal aid provider and I can advise you on your eligibility for legal aid. If you are not eligible for legal aid, we can talk about how I can help in a way you can afford.

If you can’t see what you need on this page, get in touch to see if I can help in any case.
